Dartmouth announced today, November 28, 2012, the selection of of Portland, Ore., to design a renovation and re-imagination of its Ӱkins Center for the Arts.
Since its founding 50 years ago, has established itself as Northern New England’s leading performing arts center and pioneered a model for the integration of the arts into a university community, with presentation and studio spaces united under one roof to foster cross-disciplinary collaboration at every stage of the creative process. The Ӱ is a cornerstone of Dartmouth’s expanded Arts District, encompassing the and the recently opened Black Family Visual Arts Center, designed by Machado and Silvetti Associates.
The Ӱkins Center is undertaking this project at a moment when student and public demand for its facilities and programming is greater than at any other time in the institution’s history. The Ӱ project aspires to respond to these growing needs, and coincides with the recent inauguration of its 50th Anniversary season and Dartmouth’s concurrent celebration of the arts throughout the 2012-13 academic year.
