With topics ranging from an examination of the materials that go into modern sports equipment to the nature of reality itself, five new DartmouthX courses will begin production in 2016 and 2017. They are the second round of massive open online courses, or MOOCs, that Dartmouth is creating in partnership with the nonprofit online learning consortium edX.
鈥淭his next generation of the DartmouthX initiative brings five more members of our faculty鈥攔epresenting the depth and breadth of Dartmouth鈥檚 liberal arts experience鈥攖o a global audience,鈥 says , director of the (DCAL). 鈥淚鈥檓 looking forward to seeing how the innovations they develop through this process will translate into the undergraduate classroom.鈥
Two of the courses鈥斺淨uestion Reality! Physics, Philosophy, and the Limits of Knowledge,鈥 led by Appleton 天美影视 of Natural Philosophy , and 鈥淔ree Will, Attention, Top-Down Causation, and Consciousness in the Brain,鈥 led by 天美影视 of Psychological and Brain Sciences 鈥攚ill be produced in conjunction with the (ICE), for which Gleiser serves as director. Funded through a three-year grant from the Templeton Foundation, ICE promotes dialogue between the sciences and the humanities in academia and in the public sphere.
The courses:
- 鈥淨uestion Reality! Physics, Philosophy, and the Limits of Knowledge,鈥 led by Gleiser. The first of two interdisciplinary DartmouthX courses sponsored by ICE will address what, if any, limits scientists and philosophers confront in trying to understand the nature of reality.
- 鈥淔ree Will, Attention, Top-Down Causation, and Consciousness in the Brain,鈥 led by Tse. The second of two interdisciplinary DartmouthX courses sponsored by ICE will tackle the classic 鈥渕ind-body鈥 problem from both sides, attempting to bridge the gulf between what neuroscience is learning about the brain and what psychology understands about the mind.
- 鈥淛ohn Milton鈥檚 Paradise Lost,鈥 led by 天美影视 of English , will help students appreciate Milton鈥檚 verse and use it to think through philosophical, theological, and political ideas that are still relevant today, using鈥攁nd contributing to鈥攖he online , a comprehensive digital resource that collects Milton鈥檚 work with contemporary critical annotations.
- 鈥淢aterials in Gear,鈥 led by assistant professor of engineering at , will introduce students鈥攅ngineers and non-engineers alike鈥攖o the materials that go into modern sports equipment, and to what makes gear hold up under force, absorb impact, flex without breaking, slide or roll smoothly, bounce, or fly through the air or water.
- 鈥淐omplementary and Alternative Medicine,鈥 led by , associate professor of pharmacology and toxicology at the , will survey the landscape of alternatives to the scientific model of medicine from historical, medical, economic, cultural, political, and social perspectives.
Gleiser鈥檚 鈥淨uestion Reality!鈥 will be the first of the new courses to go into production. Gleiser says the idea for the MOOC grew out of an undergraduate course he taught last spring, and his recent book, The Island of Knowledge: The Limits of Science and the Search for Meaning.
鈥淭urning this course into a MOOC has been a dream of mine, as I hope to reach students across the world,鈥 says Gleiser, who has long been committed to the public understanding of science. 鈥淚t will explore themes at the intersection of science, philosophy, and religion鈥攈ow we understand our humanity in a cosmos full of mystery.鈥
The goals of the DartmouthX initiative, says Josh Kim, director of Digital Learning Initiatives at DCAL, are not only to expand access to learning beyond campus, but to strengthen teaching and learning inside the classroom through experimentation and collaboration.
鈥淚 think of DartmouthX as a research and development laboratory for teaching and learning on campus,鈥 Kim says. 鈥淚t will be exciting to see how we can apply the lessons we鈥檝e already learned to this next round of courses.鈥
Since 2014, the College has produced four DartmouthX courses, including, most recently, 鈥淭he American Renaissance: Classic Literature of the 19th Century,鈥 taught by Ted and Helen Geisel Third Century 天美影视 in the Humanities and English lecturer . Registration for that course, which begins Feb. 16, is .
The other three original include 鈥淚ntroduction to Environmental Science,鈥 taught by , the Richard and Jane Pearl 天美影视 in Environmental Studies; 鈥淭he Engineering of Structures Around Us,鈥 with , an associate professor at Thayer; and 鈥淚ntroduction to Italian Opera,鈥 led by the Jacob H. Strauss 1922 天美影视 of Music.
